Gold at ₹1.5 Lakh – How Much Gold Can You Keep at Home, and How to Store It Safely

This Dhanteras, the gold sitting in an average Indian family's cupboard is worth more than ever before. With 24-karat gold trading at around ₹1.5 lakh per 10 grams in early October 2026, even a modest 100-gram wedding set is now a ₹15 lakh asset.
That brings us to two questions our team in Pune hears almost every week. How much gold can I legally keep at home? And where should I keep it so that it is genuinely safe?
This guide answers both, with clear numbers and without the usual sales talk.
What your family's gold is worth today
Most families have never calculated the value of their gold at today's rates. Please do it once; the number usually surprises people.
| Gold at home | Approx. value at ₹1.5 lakh per 10 g |
|---|---|
| 50 g (a pair of bangles and a chain) | ₹7.5 lakh |
| 100 g (a typical wedding set) | ₹15 lakh |
| 250 g | ₹37.5 lakh |
| 500 g | ₹75 lakh |
| 1 kg (a joint family, three generations of jewellery) | ₹1.5 crore |
Values use the 24K reference rate. Actual jewellery value depends on purity, stones and making charges.
Indian households together hold an estimated 25,000 tonnes of gold or more. That is more than the official reserves of most countries. Yet much of it still sits in a steel almirah drawer with a basic key.
How much gold can be kept at home in India?
Here is the short answer. There is no upper limit on the gold you can own, as long as it comes from explained sources. These include declared income, inheritance, agricultural income or documented gifts.
What people usually mean by "the limit" is a December 2016 instruction from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). It states that during an income-tax search, officers will not seize gold jewellery up to the following quantities, even without proof:
| Family member | Gold jewellery not seized during a search |
|---|---|
| Married woman | 500 g |
| Unmarried woman | 250 g |
| Male member | 100 g |
Take a family of four in Mumbai or Hyderabad: husband, wife, an unmarried daughter and a son. Together they can hold 950 grams without question. At today's rate, that is close to ₹1.43 crore of gold inside one flat.
Three points matter here:
- These limits are a protection during searches, not a ceiling on ownership.
- For anything above them, keep proof: purchase bills, a will or family settlement, gift deeds and your ITR records.
- For gold coins and bars, always keep the purchase invoice. The CBDT relief refers to jewellery and ornaments.
- Interestingly, the papers that prove your gold is legitimate are just as valuable as the gold itself. They also need protection from fire, which we cover below.
- This is general information, not tax advice. Please consult your CA for your specific situation.
Where Indian families store gold, and the real risks
| Storage option | Why families like it | The real risk |
|---|---|---|
| Steel almirah locker drawer | Familiar and already at home | The first place a burglar checks; opens with basic tools in minutes; no fire protection |
| Hidden spots (rice tins, false ceilings, old suitcases) | Costs nothing | Forgotten, thrown out by mistake, or found by staff; zero fire protection |
| Bank locker | Off-site and regulated | Waiting lists at busy metro branches, annual rent, access only in banking hours |
| Certified home safe locker | 24x7 access with burglary and fire protection | Must be correctly anchored and installed |
There is a reason police in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai issue "locked house" advisories before Diwali and the summer holidays. Burglars know when families travel, and they know where Indian homes keep jewellery.

Use a burglar-resistant safe, not a cupboard locker. Look for a hardplate behind the lock, anti-drill protection and a relocker that jams the bolts if the lock is attacked.
Bolt it down. An unanchored 60 kg safe can be carried away by two people. Anchor it to an RCC floor or wall with expansion bolts.
Choose fire protection. Gold melts at about 1,064°C, so the metal usually survives a house fire. Stones, pearls, kundan settings, cash, bills and property papers do not.
Pick the right lock. A fingerprint lock suits busy families; senior citizens often prefer a keypad or key. See our guide to biometric vs digital vs mechanical locks.
Watch the humidity. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, coastal humidity tarnishes silver and corrodes cheap safes. Choose a powder-coated body and keep silica gel and anti-tarnish pouches inside.
Keep an inventory. Photograph each piece, note its weight and store the bills inside the safe. Keep a copy in the cloud.
Insure it. Many home insurance policies offer jewellery cover. Some insurers ask about your safe before covering high values, so check with yours.
One more tip that most people miss is discretion. Install the safe where domestic staff, delivery agents and visitors cannot see it, such as inside a wardrobe or a dedicated niche.
Choosing the right home locker: a quick sizing guide
| Household | Typical valuables | Recommended safe | Must-have features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Young couple, flat in Pune or Hyderabad | Up to 200 g gold and documents | Compact electronic home locker | Digital or biometric lock, floor anchoring |
| Family, apartment in Mumbai or Bengaluru | 200–500 g gold, cash and papers | Fire-resistant home locker, wardrobe-concealed | Fire rating, dual locking |
| Joint family or bungalow in Ahmedabad, Jaipur or Indore | 500 g+ gold, silver and heirlooms | Fire and burglar resistant safe, double door | Heavy body, internal compartments, dual control |
For apartments in Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru, also plan for practical limits. Lift dimensions, staircase width and floor loading all matter, so a proper site survey before delivery saves a lot of trouble.
Why buy directly from a manufacturer
Buying from the factory has real advantages over a retail showroom.
Better pricing: No distributor margin is added.
Customisation: The safe can be sized to fit your wardrobe or niche exactly.
Installation and service: The people who built the safe also install and repair it.

Is there a legal limit on how much gold I can keep at home in India?
No. There is no ownership limit for gold acquired from explained sources. CBDT guidance protects 500 g for a married woman, 250 g for an unmarried woman and 100 g for a male member from seizure during searches.
Do these limits apply to gold coins and bars?
The CBDT relief refers to jewellery and ornaments. Always keep invoices for coins and bars.
Is a home safe safer than a bank locker?
Each has strengths. Read our comparison of bank lockers and home safes, including RBI's liability rules.
Where is the best place to install a home safe?
Choose a concealed spot, such as a wardrobe or a dedicated niche. Bolt the safe to RCC, keep it away from bathrooms and water lines, and keep it out of sight of visitors.
